Tom Cruise waits to be beamed up

Tom Cruise Waits To Be Beamed Up

For a long time popular actor Tom Cruise had good people around him who were able to save him from himself.

A devout Scientologist from early in his acting career, Cruise built up a huge following of fans due to remarkable performances in films such as 'Risky Business', 'Rain Man', 'Top Gun', and 'A Few Good Men', all the while practicing his religion privately.

That all changed in 2004 when Cruise fired his long-time publicist and replaced her with his own sister - who was also a devout Scientologist. Long kept in check by wiser and maturer heads around him, Cruises' devotion to Scientology began to overshadow his professional life.

After a bitter divorce with the actress Nicole Kidman in which her refusal to raise the couple's children according to Scientologist beliefs played no small part, Cruise evidently determined that his next spouse would have to convert to Scientology first before things could go further.

What followed was one of the most bizarre courtships ever carried out in the public eye.

Appearing on the Oprah Winfrey show, Cruise suddenly began proclaiming excitedly his undying love for actress Katie Holmes, who was sixteen years his junior and three inches taller than he was, and with whom he had never been seen with in public before. Practically jumping up and down on Oprah's couch with excitement, the actor had Holmes brought out for the audience and proceeded to exclaim over and over again how deeply in love he was with her.

If that wasn't bizarre enough, it turned out that Holmes' family had lost track of her for over three weeks and had no idea where she was until she suddenly showed up on television as Tom Cruises' new girlfriend. When pressed to discuss how they met, and how long it took them to fall in love together, neither was able to provide a direct answer.

Curiously, a story was making the rounds during the production of Cruise's latest film at the time, Mission Impossible: 3, that the actress he originally cast to star opposite himself, Scarlett Johansson, rebuffed his attempts to get her interested in Scientology.

And just this week, a video of Tom Cruise taken at a Scientology seminar several years ago where he discussed at length his religious beliefs, turned up on the internet.

It's reached the point that many movie fans can only shake their heads and wonder if the brilliant actor is ever going to tone down all the Scientology stuff and just go back to making movies like 'Rain Man'.
