The Miniature Schnauzer a family Dog
The Miniature Schnauzer is a beautiful, spirited companion for the family. The history of the Miniature Schnauzer is not certain however some believe that the black poodle, wolf-spitz and some rough coated German terriers are in the ‘mix’. The breed was first used as ratters and they do that job well. The breed was developed in Germany at the end of the Nineteenth Century. First recognized by the AKC in 1926 they have become a favorite of people all over the world. The Miniature Schnauzer is a medium sized dog, they are between twelve and fourteen inches tall and thirteen to fifteen pounds. Their frame is muscular but square and compact. Their coat is pure black or ‘pepper and salt’ and wiry. In Europe a white coat is a rarity but this is not allowed in America. The Miniature Schnauzer has a distinctive ‘beard’ and hair around the eyes that need to be kept trimmed. The ‘beard’ should be wiped with a clean rag or paper towel after a meal to prevent matting. Sometimes the ears are cropped to stand upright and the tails are usually docked, although this is not as common as it once was it is still the most common for show dogs. When selecting a Miniature Schnauzer make sure that you go to a reputable breeder. They have a couple of diseases that they are vulnerable to and a puppy mill can produce some horrific results. The breed can develop juvenile cataracts that without expensive surgery will lead to blindness. Who would want a blind puppy? Reputable breeders have very carefully retired many dogs from breeding due to this disorder and now it is rare outside puppy mills. Also the breed is prone to number of diseases related to urination including urinary tract infections. This small breed is active but does quite well in an apartment with a nice daily walk as they do in the country with a large yard to roam in. They do well with family members including children however they can be suspicious and standoffish with strangers. Also the Miniature Schnauzer needs some grooming of its coat or it will become matted and need to be professionally groomed. The breed makes a good watchdog and as such they will bark. Sometimes when you do not want them to! The Miniature Schnauzer is a fine dog in the city or country and good with children. Fanciers love their courage and energy and they love their owners with their whole hearts.
