Terrel Owens CRIES, I Love My Quarterback
Terrell Owens: I Love Me Some Quarterback! After the Dallas Cowboys' stunning early playoff loss to the New York Giants in the divisional round, reporters were ready to pounce on Dallas' QB Tony Romo. All week long leading up to the big game controversy brewed over Romo's decision to take a weekend trip to Cabo San Lucas in Mexico with celebrity girlfriend Jessica Simpson, her parents and several Cowboy teammates, such as Jason Witten. Someone tipped off the paparazzi and they were waiting when the party arrived at the hotel. Within hours pictures of Romo, Simpson and others frolicking at the resort were making their way all over the world via the internet. Despite the fact that Cowboy's head coach Wade Phillips had told players to take the weekend off, and to 'get away from football', many Cowboy fans were more than a little upset that Romo seemed to be taking it easy with a big playoff game looming ahead. Winless in 5 tries the playoffs since it's last Super Bowl team in 1995, pressure is growing for the team to deliver a win, and the image of their star QB prancing around on a Mexican beach with his shapely blonde starlet girlfriend wasn't exactly what many rabid fans wanted to see. All week long speculation raged about how it would play out. If Romo played great and the Cowboys won, it would look like a smart move, letting the guys relax and then come back focused for the game. On the other hand if Romo played poorly and the team lost, there would be a firestorm of criticism by fans looking for someone or something to blame for frustrating them yet again. Cowboy fans were already suspicious of Simpson after Romo played poorly in a game against the Philadelphia Eagles, during which the TV cameras repeatedly showed her in the audience. After the fact Terrell Owens, the Cowboys star wide receiver revealed he was the one that suggested the Mexico trip to Romo, and had paid for it as a way of thanking the QB for the great year they had had on the field together. Realizing Romo was about to get hit with an avalanche of unfair criticism for taking a vacation that both coaches and Owens himself had urged him to take, this player who has often been called self-absorbed by many sports fans, could not control his emotions and broke down and cried before the world. Saying it was unfair for Romo to get most of the blame for the loss, Owens repeated several times, "It's unfair. That's my quarterback. It was a team loss. We lost as a team." Such a display of emotion shocked many sports fans across the nation; others merely cynically ridiculed it. One thing remains certain. Owens has his teammates' back, and there are alot of Quarterbacks in the NFL that wish they had somebody standing up for them after such a tough loss.
