Do's and Dont's of Single Parenting

The Dos & Dont's of Single Parenting

Being a single parent is hard and it can be even harder if you are unsure how to react, handle and discipline your child. Each child is different of course but some basic guidelines never hurt anyone.

There are many different factors that come into the dos and don’ts of single parenting. For instance, why you are a single parent, the age of your child and how many children you have. These factors vary with each single parent and their unique situation. Before you make any type of parenting decision it is important to keep in mind these factors. These factors may help you understand the behavior of your child in a more advanced way.

Don’ts

The don’ts that are associated with single parenting are not that different from family parenting. There are a few that are targeted towards single parents only. Many single parents have the tendency to feel guilty that their child is missing the other parent and they may try to replace this parenting figure with material items. This is a strategy that does not work. Spoiling a child with every material item they want is not going to replace their missing parent but it will cause a huge chance in attitude as well as the respect they feel for you. The moment you start expressing your guilt and love through material goods, the child will take advantage of this weakness and then you are no longer the parent in control.

Another common don’t in the world of single parenting relates to the fatigue and stress of the parent. As a single parent you are more than likely up all night with your child and working all day. When the time comes to be home with your child many parents stick their child in front of the television so they can have a break. This is a huge don’t as you are not spending any quality time with your child nor are they learning anything from watching television. You might want to try playing games, reading, practicing writing and other educational but fun tasks instead.

Dos

As a single parent you are running around all day at work and all night at home. In whatever spare time you have you should be spending it with your child. The more organized and routine like your day becomes, the more of this spare time you will have. Spending time with your child playing games, reading and writing is special time that you and your child can both benefit from.

No matter how stressful your life has become it is important to always put this stress aside when it comes time to spend time with your child or children. You never want to make them feel like burden on you. Single parents need to rely on their children more, the older they become and this reliance creates a very special bond that not many parents share with their parent.

Being a single parent is not easy but the relationship that you are able to create with your child is irreplaceable! The dos and don’ts of single parenting can be learned through trial and error but being aware of a slight guideline such as this may help you along the way.
