Child Abuse Scars for Life

Child Abuse Not Only Causes Physical and Emotional Pain
But Also Scars A Child for Life

Child Abuse Memories Can Strike Anytime And Causes Lifetime Scars

Imagine this scenario. You meet the perfect mate who has all the qualities you’ve been
searching for. The two of you date exclusively for one year, fall in love and get married.
The wedding night is a total disaster. You can’t seem to do anything right to please her,
she seems agitated, withdrawn and basically doesn’t want to engage in any type of sexual
activity that would consummate your vows. Then, every single night after the horrendous
wedding night, you notice a change in your mate. She begins having awful nightmares,
headaches and irrational mood swings. She can’t sleep, wakes up in a cold sweat, and you
don’t know what to do to make it better. She is stressed. You’re stressed and your sexual
and personal life become a horrendous nightmare and you wonder, what in the world, did
I do wrong and will my life be like this forever? Well, you love this woman and you stick
it out. After months of frustrating medical tests and intense psychotherapy, the truth
begins to unravel. Your beloved is the victim of child sexual and physical abuse suffered
over 10 years ago and although she was able to hide it from herself and you for over a
year, the truth comes crashing down and her scars must now heal.
Child Abuse Affects People From All Walks of Life
Child abuse is a national dilemma that affects individuals of all walks of life. In
fact, the Department of Health and Human Services estimates that “the number of
children abused or neglected annually has more than doubled in the past decade--
from 1.4 million to 2.9 million.”(qtd. in Paulk) And, according to recent reports of
sexual abuse, “at least 20% of American women and 5% to 16% of American men
experienced some form of sexual abuse as children and in a national survey of
more than 1200 adults, 27% of women and 16% of men reported having been
victimized. Although health care providers are legally required to report cases of
child abuse to authorities, only one fourth to one third of all such cases are ever
reported.” Last, but not least, in a recent national survey, “neglect represented 60%
of confirmed cases (55% in 1986); physical abuse, 23% (26% in 1986); sexual
abuse, 9% (16% in 1986); emotional abuse, 4% (8% in 1986); and other forms of
maltreatment, 5%.” (qtd. in Paulk)
